9 Days/8 Nights for Carnaval:  Santiago de Cuba > Holguin > Bayamo

Travel to Eastern Cuba and follow the Ruta Chan Chan through Holguin on your way to the Carnaval at Santiago de Cuba. This experience grants you a rich mix of music, history and nature as you spend several days in the regional capitals of Holguin and Bayamo before heading to Santiago for the special event.

Set out from Santiago

Your trip begins in Cuba's 2nd city, Santiago, where'll you'll spend the night of your arrival day. Get orientated to the East and learn about the two Cuban revolutions - colonial and contemporary - that were cradled here.

Begin the Ruta Chan Chan

"de Alto Cedro voy para Marcané..."

Set out on the old roads between Santiago and Holguin and follow the tracks laid down by traveling Cuban musicians over the centuries. Make Holguin your home for a few nights and enjoy all the charm that this regional capital has to offer visitors.

Parque Nacional La Mensura & Salto del Guayabo

"...llego a Cueto voy para Mayarí..."

Continue la Chan Chan to its terminus then turn up into the highlands. Beat the heat by spending the day at National Park La Mensura where the mountains keep the climes cool and visit Cuba tallest waterfall - Salto del Guayabo.

One of the greatest kept secrets is the charming little regional capital of the Granma province, Bayamo. Handsome and authentic as Holguin but smaller and quirkier. Bayamo has the services and cultural attractions of a regional capital but none of the crowd or grit you'll find in larger cities. Check out the park on the river and the surprisingly impressive wax museum.

Optional Pico Turquino Hike

If you have that need to climb to the top of the tallest peak around now's your chance. Pico Turquino is Cuba's tallest at an accessible 6476 ft above sea level. Set out early spend the day on the trails that Fidel and company used to hide their headquarters from Batista's troops. Look out over the island and the Caribbean on the other side of the ridge where the mountains disappear into the sea.

Carnaval at Santiago de Cuba

At the end of your tracing of the steps Cubans musicians have taken across the Ruta Chan Chan over the centuries you'll return to Santigao de Cuba and spend three days and two night participating in the climactic weekend of their yearly Carnaval celebration!
